UAE tops Middle East electric vehicle sales for second consecutive year
Strong market momentum highlighted in latest global energy outlook report
DUBAI – The International Energy Agency Global EV Outlook 2026 has reaffirmed the position of the United Arab Emirates as the leading market for electric vehicle sales in the Middle East for the second consecutive year.
The country accounted for nearly 50 percent of total EV sales across the region, underlining its accelerating shift towards clean mobility.
The report points to a growing alignment between national policy frameworks and consumer adoption trends. It also highlights the UAE’s strengthening role in shaping sustainable transport markets across the region.
Charging surge
Electric vehicle uptake in the UAE continues to gain momentum as demand expands across both private and commercial segments. The IEA report notes that the country’s share of regional EV sales has reached close to half, reflecting rapid consumer transition towards low-emission transport options.
Market expansion is further supported by increased availability of models and improving charging accessibility across urban centres.
Policy impact
The performance has been closely linked to the National Electric Vehicles Policy launched in 2023 by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. The framework focuses on accelerating EV adoption, scaling up charging infrastructure, and attracting investment into sustainable mobility solutions.
Officials noted that supportive legislation and coordinated public-private efforts have created a favourable environment for manufacturers and users alike. The policy also aligns with wider national strategies, including the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

Officials emphasised that the country’s progress reflects a long-term vision to position the UAE as a global hub for clean energy innovation and transport technology. The development of integrated charging networks, including the launch of UAEV, is seen as a key step towards nationwide infrastructure readiness.
